The education system in Andorra: everything you need to know before moving with your family

Three public systems, two international private schools and a university of its own. Andorra offers more educational options than most families expect — and qualifications are internationally recognised.

When someone considers moving to Andorra, the conversation usually starts with taxes. But when children are involved, the second question comes quickly: what about schools? It is a completely reasonable question. Choosing a country to live in means choosing an environment where your children will grow, learn and make friends. The good news is that Andorra has a much stronger answer than most people expect.

The first surprise

Andorra has three public, free education systems

Yes, public and free. Not one, but three state-funded education systems coexist in the Principality. There are currently around 11,000 pupils in non-university education in Andorra.

🇦🇩
Andorran System
Teaching language: Catalan
Catalan as the base language, with French from the start. English introduced in primary, Spanish in the third cycle. Around 40% of students.
🇫🇷
French System
Teaching language: French
Managed by France, funded by Andorra. Follows the French national curriculum. Leads to the official baccalauréat.
🇪🇸
Spanish System
Teaching language: Spanish
Managed by Spain’s Ministry of Education. Includes María Moliner School and congregational centres. 3,029 pupils in 2024-25.
🌍
Private Schools
Teaching language: English
Two international private schools with the International Baccalaureate (IB) option.
⚠ One thing to be aware of

Although all three public systems are free, Catalan is compulsory in all schools. Children arriving without Catalan will go through a language integration process — worth knowing in advance.

The youngest learners

Early childhood education: from 4 months

Andorra has a network of llars d’infants (nurseries) welcoming babies from 4 months. From age 3, the maternal stage begins with enrolment close to 98%. Primary education is compulsory from age 6, with small classes and near-personalised attention.

Primary and secondary

How does compulsory schooling work?

Compulsory education covers ages 6 to 16.

✅ General advantages
  • Very low student-teacher ratio
  • Real multilingualism from an early age
  • Safe environments free from big-city issues
  • Skiing is a subsidised curriculum subject
  • Schools in every parish
⚠ What you should know
  • ·Extra-curricular offer more limited than in big cities
  • ·Children without Catalan need a language integration period
  • ·No state schools in English (private only)

Upper secondary

Post-compulsory secondary: upper secondary in Andorra

Several pathways coexist depending on the system chosen:

Spanish system

Fully homologated Spanish baccalaureate, identical to one obtained anywhere in Spain.

French system

The official French baccalauréat with the same conditions of access to French universities.

Andorran system

Recognised in Spain and France through bilateral agreements. In some cases the UNED (PCE) exam may be required for Spanish university access.

International Baccalaureate (IB) — Agora International School

Recognised by over 5,000 universities worldwide. IB PYP for primary implemented since 2023.

“A student who completes upper secondary in Andorra has real options for higher education in Spain, France, the UK or North America. The key is choosing the right system from the start.”

International recognition

Are Andorran qualifications recognised abroad?

The answer is yes, in most cases, with nuances depending on the system chosen and the destination country.

🇪🇸 Spain Automatic
Homologated Spanish title. Direct recognition for Spanish and Catalan universities.
🇫🇷 France Automatic
Official French baccalauréat. Direct access to French universities.
🇬🇧 United Kingdom Via IB
With Agora’s IB Diploma, access to British universities including Oxford and Cambridge.
🇺🇸 USA / Canada Via IB
Over 5,000 North American universities recognise the IB.
🇩🇪 Germany Via IB
IB Diploma recognised in Germany. Andorra–EU bilateral agreement.
🇵🇹 Portugal Automatic
Automatic mutual recognition since the 2019 agreement.
📋 Practical advice

If you know which country your children want to study in, choose the system that facilitates that access from the start. Spanish system → Spanish university. Baccalauréat → French university. IB → virtually any university in the world.

Private schools

Private schools: when English is the priority

Agora International School Andorra

Located in L’Aldosa (La Massana), part of the Globeducate group. Authorised IB Examination Centre since 2020. IB PYP since 2023. Notable high-performance sport programme.

British College of Andorra

Follows the British National Curriculum. Particularly suitable for families from English-speaking countries.

✅ Why choose a private school
  • English as teaching language from the earliest years
  • International environment (over 24 nationalities at Agora)
  • IB recognised worldwide
  • High-performance sport programmes integrated
⚠ What to consider
  • ·Fees apply: significantly higher than state schools
  • ·Only two private schools in the whole country
  • ·No state funding

Higher education

Is there a university in Andorra?

Yes. The Universitat d’Andorra (UdA), founded in 1988, is a member of the European University Association (EUA) and the Erasmus+ programme. It operates within the European Higher Education Area.

📖 The reality about university in Andorra

The UdA is a small university with a limited range of degrees. Many young people choose to continue their studies abroad. The multilingualism acquired in Andorra prepares them well for that transition. The government provides a scholarship system to support studies abroad.

Continuing education and postgraduate

What if I want to keep developing professionally?

The UdA offers master’s programmes and postgraduate courses aimed at working professionals, in blended and virtual formats.

What Andorra cannot offer (and how to work around it)

The local MBA offering is limited. Barcelona ~3 hours away (ESADE, IESE, UPF) and Toulouse ~2 hours away (Toulouse Business School). Online learning is increasingly making location irrelevant.

✅ Advantages for the working professional
  • Blended masters compatible with professional life
  • Barcelona ~3 hours away: ESADE, IESE, UPF, UB
  • Toulouse ~2 hours away: Toulouse Business School
  • Data Protection postgrad with UPF Barcelona School of Management
  • Doctoral programme available at eUniv
⚠ What to bear in mind
  • ·Very limited local MBA offer
  • ·UdA masters taught mainly in Catalan
  • ·Highly specialised training likely requires travel or online study

An honest perspective

Andorra as a place to grow up: beyond the classroom

Andorra offers something increasingly hard to find: safety, nature and space. Some of the highest safety indices in Europe, minimal crime, and daily access to skiing, hiking and the mountains.

To be honest: the cultural and leisure offer is more limited than in a large city, and higher education usually means leaving the country. But for many families, that balance — nature, safety, quality education and multilingualism — is exactly what they are looking for.
